What is life balance?

It can be different for each one of us. One thing we can probably all agree on is that life balance is a journey rather than a destination.

The National Work Life Initiative, which is now part of the Alliance for Work Life Progress (AWLP) suggests that the term "work-life," in the broader sense, defines "policies, programs, services, and attitudes within an organization that are specific to fostering the well-being of its employees through the effective management of work, family, and personal life." Work-life balance benefits both individuals and organizations in the following ways:

  • Contributes to the well being and productivity of the worker and their workplaces.
  • Improves job satisfaction, commitment to employers, and retention.
  • Helps nurture happier, harder-working employees by alleviating on-the-job stress.
  • Increases on-the-job performance.
  • Lessens employee use of the health care system.
  • Helps improve self-esteem and lessens feelings of anger or resentment.
  • Helps build stronger families.
  • Allows parents to be more involved in their children's lives.

We know well the demands and expectations that employees are faced with day in and day out. The information on this web site is specifically targeted to assist employees with efforts to balance work and life.
